With a rotating cast of local-hero musicians joining Uosikkinen, ITP’s been on a mission to record and perform some of Philly’s “essential songs”—tracks originally written by Philadelphians and/or recorded here, including well-known ditties from Robert Hazard, the Dovells, Todd Rundgren and, yes, the Hooters. It’s all to benefit Philly’s Settlement Music School, which provides lessons and activities for anyone, regardless of financial circumstances. Along with Uosikkinen, tonight’s ITP lineup includes Tommy Conwell, Ben Arnold, Jeffrey Gaines, members of Beru Revue and Soul Survivors, and others, with proceeds going to SMS. Admission is $20; $45 gets you an early dinner and a meet-and-greet with the band. 9pm. $20-$45. Brownies 23 East, 23 E. Lancaster Ave. 610.649.8389. brownies23east.com

A while back, he launched Songs In The Pocket, a series of reinterpretations of “essential songs of Philadelphia,” benefitting Settlement Music School, and this Saturday, he and Ben Arnold, Jeffrey Gaines, and Tommy Conwell (to name a few) will play the catalog at Brownie's in Ardmore. Tickets are $20 to $45, so go here to buy some and support a worthy musical cause.

So far, three tracks are available through iTunes and Amazon, and proceeds benefit students at Philly’s Settlement Music School. This is an ongoing project, so expect more good things to come. songsinthepocket.org

We’re currently in the nostalgic afterglow. All you need to cut a record these days,
Young says, is a computer before dropping the tracks in the studio.
Thanks to the Internet, the music industry’s bar of entry is pretty much on the
ground. “You’re a producer if you say you are,” says David Uosikkinen, the longtime
drummer for The Hooters. Tarsia compares the changing music scene to television.
There used to be three TV stations, he says, but “now we have 300 [and] no one can afford
anything of substance.”
“Musicians don’t go to the studio and create music anymore,” Young says.
“I think that’s the way technology has changed music,” says Uosikkinen, whose project,
In the Pocket (www.songsinthepocket.org), features a rotating group of musicians
playing songs either recorded in Philadelphia or by Philadelphians. “For better or for
worse, that’s how it is. It’s expensive to do it [like Gamble and Huff]. There are a lot of
economics involved. Just to get five great musicians into a room together costs money.”
Just because something is the norm, doesn’t make it right. “There’s nothing like
being in a studio [with musicians] because you’re going to feel the real dramatics from
the human beings that are going to be inflicted into your music,” Huff says.
“Humans sweat,” Gamble says. “That’s what’s missing from the records today, is the
sweat and the effort and the energy. And the other thing that’s missing from it is the
mistakes that humans make that sometimes turn out to be something that’s fantastic.”
Gamble and Huff ’s collaborative, hands-on days do come back—every 13-and-a-half
minutes, to be exact.
“That scene was remarkable,” says Uosikkinen, who plans to record “Back Stabbers”
with MFSB guitarists Bobby Eli and T.J. Tindall for In the Pocket. “It’s part of Americana
and it comes from our city. It’s awesome.”

<![CDATA[David Uosikkinen Presents His Essential Songs Of Philadelphia]]> http://www.songsinthepocket.com/press http://www.songsinthepocket.com/press Fri, 1 Oct 2010 01:00:00 -0500 http://www.songsinthepocket.com/press Mike Vagnoni From the band that brought national attention to Philadelphia's pop music scene, The Hooters' David Uosikkinen is recording what he feels, are the Essential Songs of Philadelphia. The songs that drummer Uosikkinen chose to revisit were either recorded in Philadelphia or written and performed by Philadelphians. These essential songs will feature the band ITP (In The Pocket), a rotating line up of Philly's most respected musicians. The first song, All My Mondays is available for download for 99 cents at songsinthepocket.org. Award Winning producer/director Steve Acito of Bluewire Media will produce a video documentary of the recording of each song.

IN THE POCKET: ESSENTIAL SONGS OF PHILADELPHIA's debut song, All My Mondays originally recorded by 80s band, Youth Camp. The new version features some of Philadelphia's premiere musicians: David Uosikkinen (The Hooters) on drums, Eric Bazilian (The Hooters) on guitar/vocals , Richard Bush (The A’s/The Peace Creeps) on vocals, Greg Davis (Beru Revue) on guitar, Rob Hyman (The Hooters) on keyboards/vocals and William Wittman (Too Much Joy/Cyndi Lauper) on bass.

Initially recorded in 1983, Youth Camp played the Philly music scene for a mere six months before calling it quits. Youth Camp's lineup included lead singer Joey Wilson, John Kuzma on guitar, bassist Rob Miller and David Uosikkinen on drums. Joey Wilson passed away on Christmas Eve in 1998.

"I chose All My Mondays because it's a song that has stayed with me all through the years," explains Uosikkinen. "It's also a way to pay tribute to Joey, whose talent should have gone far beyond the Philadelphia music scene."

A portion of IN THE POCKET's proceeds will benefit Philadelphia's Settlement Music School. With six branches in PA and NJ, it is the largest community school of the arts in the United States serving 15,000 students each year regardless of age, race, or financial means. Settlement brings together an enormous diversity of students and helps them to not only develop musical and artistic talents, but also build self-confidence and readiness for academic and other achievements. Settlement Music School's alumni includes some of Philadelphia's most beloved residents including Kevin and Michael Bacon, G. Love, Stanley Clark and Kevin Eubanks. Settlement awards more than $2 million annually in financial aid and scholarships. For more information, visit www.smsmusic.org or call 215-320-2600.
